I would imagine most are pretty close, but the higher-end places have a higher standard of employment (looks, attitude, etc) which can come with higher pay. If it's a boutique (sell many brands), they're undoubtedly losing money, if they're empty - that clout comes hand-in-hand with higher-than-normal rents, which, for some locations in the mall, are well over 6-figures per month.Īre employees in those stores usually minimum wage as well? Yorkdale has lots of clout, it's got one of the highest "revenue per sq ft" in North America (2nd or 3rd, can't remember which) - these big names can afford to write off any month-to-month losses just so they can tout that they have a 3500sq ft retail location at Yorkdale. That being said, if it's a big name, like Fendi or Hugo Boss or Lacoste, they're likely subsidized by the parent company. Keep in mind that the bulk of retail revenue likely comes in from friday 5pm to sunday close, so if you're seeing them empty on a tuesday at 2pm, it's probably not indicative of their overall customer volumes.
